Delight Risk

“When you walk to the edge of the precipice, two things can happen. Either you will fall, or you will be taught to fly.” said Janice

“What the hell does that mean or have anything to do with what I’m talking about?” asked Cindy

“Go out with him. Have fun. Say yes for once. You know he’s not an axe murderer. You’ve told me for years how much you admire this guy and now he’s asked you out and you doubt yourself. Get over it. Let yourself be happy. Don’t waste this chance,”

Cindy pressed her lips together tightly to keep from smiling. She took deep calm breaths, and her eyes sparkled. “I should, shouldn’t I? I mean, he called out of the blue and said nice stuff. We’d both been thinking about the same things.” She pulled her hair over her face to hide her eyes.

“When will you talk to him again?”

“We’re meeting up at the Waffle House for coffee.” Cindy’s eyes were bright. “I did the right thing, offering to meet him, right? Public, well lit, no alcohol.”

“He’ll be reminded of your sainthood. It’s perfect. You couldn’t top it with Taco Bell. They don’t  serve coffee, and Taco Bell’s too disorganized. Excellent choice.” Janice rolled her eyes. “Cracker Barrel, with its endless gift shop, couldn’t have been a better choice.”

“It was the first place I could think of. Give me a break. I was under a lot of pressure to make a fast decision. Am I going to fly or fall?”

“That’s up to you, Cindy. What are you going to wear?”

Cindy grabbed the back of the chair for support, “O shit, now I have that to worry about that too. You just had to bring up something else for me to think about.” But she couldn’t stop grinning. She was ready to fly.
