January 6

In a flash of inspiration, Cynthia decided to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany.  She’d had a vision of the three wise men giving their gifts to the Christ child and decided it would be fun to have a small Christmas today. She was sure to get an eye roll from her kids. That’s what moms did.

She gathered them together to drop the bombshell. “Today is January 6, Old Christmas, the day the Magi gave their gifts to Mary’s baby. We’re celebrating. Go make something or find something to give to each other. Recycle, reuse, regift. We have plenty of stuff in the house for this. Find something each of us will appreciate. The feast is in one hour. Go.

The eye roll was bigger than expected.

“What?” They whined when she turned off the tv. “We’re not doing that.”

“Make sure the presents are wrapped. On your mark, get set, go.” Cynthia laid her gifts under the tree, They were very small.

The eye rolls were impressive, but the boys got off of the couch and out of the chair and went on their scavenger hunts. They would have a little Christmas after all.
