“Which house shall we hit next, the brick one or that long white one with just the porch light on?” The Bunny Sisters collaborated. Trick or Treat was a serious matter. It had to be done in the most efficient and interesting of ways. Their costumes were fashioned of dresses from the thirties and their heads crafted of paper mache, saved brown grocery store bags and glue of today. They’d taken months to fashion. They were works of art. These costumes were bonafide creepy, the stuff of nightmares and bank robberies right down to their lace up boots.
“Let’s save the long white house for last. I get a vibe from that one that goes beyond the holiday, ‘something wicked this way comes’ kind of vibe, I like it. The rest of these houses are going to be chocolate and Necco wafers. I can tell,” said the tallest bunny who appeared to be the leader.
They journeyed to the brick house and rang the bell. A deep mean bark greeted them from within. “Down, Cooper.” said a friendly voice. The man stepped back a bit when he was confronted by the Bunny Sisters, he’d never seen such well made, if a bit on the weird side, costumes, “You three look like something from a 30’s storybook of terror tales.”
The three high fived it and held out their candy bags in silence. Cooper, the dog with the huge mean bark slunk off behind his master, whining. They curtseyed, turned, and left. The man with the big dog in the brick house watched as they walked down his driveway and disappeared into the dark. Cold chills ran down his arms. Cooper lay at his feet, whining. “Fine guard dog you are.”
“Exquisite, haul ladies. Fine job. Now where do we go? The two story stucco across the street with the big windows and the fodder shock looks good. I bet they would love to see us too. Maybe they have a dog as well,” said the shortest of the Bunny Sisters.
They rang the bell and no one answered. They heard a dog whine from inside. They rang the bell but no one answered. Again, they heard the dog whine from inside. All the bunnies laughed. They’d get no candy from here tonight. Word was out on the street that creepy bunnies were loose. Check your security cams if you got ‘em.
The long low white house with the single porch light was last on their list. The house gave them a vibe. Their ears twitched in anticipation. They felt the heels of the boots fairly wiggle as they walked up the drive. The door yanked open before they could knock. “Good evening ladies, I’ve been expecting you. You’ve scared the neighborhood half to death with your exquisite frippery. I commend your designers. Realism, however, on Halloween tends to scare the shit out of people,” said a crone dressed in a black ceremonial robe with a hood lined in green. She drew a circle of salt around the Bunny Sisters and threw a handful of black licorice into each bag. “You’ll have a better evening now. I cast a happy spell of protection around you all, and folks will be happy and proud of your work and attention to detail. You’ll quit scaring people. Next Halloween cast your spell before you do all this magnificent work. You’ll be safe now,” and the crone went back inside her house.
“I told you there was a vibe here,” said the tall Bunny Sister.
“Yeah, but she gave us black licorice,” said the middle one.
