The quiet is different this morning.
Its timbre has a breadth, a substance
I hadn’t noticed before.
The quiet when the boys slept was full of their dreams
This emptiness is hard. It supersedes noise
from the TV
that deafens the background silence.
It shatters then evaporates like it never was.
It has form,
it moves about the house
like a cat.
Sometimes it takes a moment for it to creep
Up to settle in beside me for the night.
